Vaccines

Our leadership in the vaccines market is based on comprehensive expertise in the field of veterinary immunology. In-house capabilities are enhanced by collaborative agreements with leading external parties, enabling us to harness a broad range of new technologies. Our portfolio is updated constantly, with a steady flow of new product introductions offering our customers enhanced protection against existing targets or expanding coverage to include emerging disease threats.

Emerging diseases

The toll exacted by bluetongue on Europe's ruminant populations in 2007 underlined the threat posed by emerging animal diseases. By the end of 2007 we had secured the development for BOVILIS BTV8, a product that protects ruminants against the viral strain involved in the recent outbreaks of the disease. BOVILIS BTV8 can now be used to help prevent a repeat of the problems witnessed in 2007.

Across the Atlantic, West Nile virus (WNV) – never previously recorded in the region – emerged recently as a deadly threat to equine populations in the U.S.A. and Canada. Again, Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health rose to the challenge, developing and registering PREVENILE, a novel chimera vaccine offering rapid onset of immunity and protecting treated animals against WNV for a full year via a single dose. A chimera vaccine is created by combining two similar viruses (flaviviruses) into one.

Marker technology

Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health is a leader in the development and application of marker vaccines. By enabling differentiation between vaccinated animals and those exposed to wild virus strains, these products are changing approaches to the control and eradication of major livestock diseases. Most significantly, they have enabled a move away from traditional eradication-only policies, which are not only hugely expensive, but which often also involve the destruction of millions of often healthy animals.

We have developed and commercialized marker vaccines against some of the world's most economically devastating animal diseases, including foot and mouth disease, classical swine fever, avian influenza and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis. Our swine marker vaccine, PORCILIS AD BEGONIA, was the first product of its type to receive a centralized approval from regulators in Europe and is the world's market leading vaccine against Aujeszky's disease (AD), having sold over 500 million doses.

Live and inactivated vaccines

PORCILIS AD BEGONIA is part of a broad swine vaccine range that allows producers to cover all bases where disease prevention and control is concerned. Key elements of the portfolio include PORCILIS PRRS, based on the European strain of the virus responsible for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, and PORCILIS APP, a sub-unit vaccine that confers protection against severe respiratory infections caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Circumvent PCV2 helps prevent the spread of porcine circovirus type 2, which is responsible for post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), while our respiratory vaccine range includes the mycoplasmal pneumonia preventatives, PORCILIS M Hyo and M+Pac, as well as PORCILIS AR-T, an inactivated vaccine against atrophic rhinitis.

Infectious disease outbreaks can have a devastating impact on poultry production. Our unparalleled portfolio of poultry biologicals includes the world's leading coccidiosis vaccines, COCCIVAC and PARACOX, while our NOBILIS line offers protection against a range of viral and bacterial disease. It is spearheaded by our live infectious bursal disease vaccines, NOBILIS GUMBORO 228E and NOBILIS GUMBORO D78. SALENVAC T protects against the most common types of Salmonella that cause food poisoning in humans, while NETVAX is the first vaccine approved for the prevention of necrotic enteritis in poultry.

Our BOVILIS and VISTA lines offer protection for ruminants against a range of respiratory and reproductive infections. High profile products in this segment of the portfolio include Europe's number one vaccine against calf pneumonia, BOVILIS BOVIPAST RSP, and DECIVAC FMD DOE, our inactivated vaccine for the protection of cattle, sheep and pigs against foot and mouth disease.

We are expanding globally in aquatic animal health as the worldwide consumption of fish increases. We are the leading aquatic animal health company and now supply immersion, injection and oral vaccines to a wide range of different fish species including salmon, trout, sea bass, sea bream, tilapia, barramundi, cod, yellowtail and amberjack.

The Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health companion animal vaccine range has been strengthened considerably through the addition of innovative new products, the application of techniques that extend duration of immunity and the employment of convenient, less stressful delivery methods. Our NOBIVAC, GALAXY, QUANTUM, PROCYON, ECLIPSE, FEVAXYN and INTRA-TRAC ranges offer truly comprehensive protection against a range of serious infections in pets. Products offering three years of immunity against the most common canine and feline pathogens have been added to the portfolio recently under the CONTINUUM label. CONTINUUM DAP, our modified live virus vaccine, offers extended protection against distemper, adenovirus type-1 and parvovirus in dogs, meeting the changing needs of our customers. NOBIVAC PARVO C (parvovirus) and NOBIVAC KC (Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza virus) are other key elements of the canine vaccine range.
Our equine line has been boosted by the introduction of the PREVENILE West Nile virus preventative, and by EQUILIS PREQUENZA – the first commercially available vaccine proven to protect against the most recently-emerged strains of equine influenza.
