Modern technology for animal and consumer safety - Intervet International

25 June 2005

With growing concern, we all read about outbreaks of highly infectious animal diseases, such as Foot and Mouth. Usually, these outbreaks result in millions of animals being killed in order to keep the disease from spreading. Using modern biotechnology, Intervet has developed vaccines which combined with a diagnostic test help authorities to distinguish between animals that have been vaccinated and animals that carry the disease. This is vital to help prevent the killing of large amounts of healthy animals.

Intervet is world leader in vaccines applicable in marker concepts against four major livestock diseases:

  • Foot and Mouth Disease
  • Classical Swine Fever
  • Aujeszky’s Disease (Pseudorabies)
  • Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis

In addition to these availabe marker systems Intervet has set up an extensive program to develop an effective marker system to control Avian Influenza.

Intervet has also invested many years of intensive research and development efforts to replace raw materials derived from animals that are used during production of a range of veterinary vaccines. The goal is to further reduce the chance of contamination with micro-organisms. The first success in this area has already been put to market: A vaccine against an infectious respiratory disease in cattle.
