Schering-Plough Animal Health Corporation Introduces New Product Application to Control Swine Respiratory Disease

27 January 2006

Schering-Plough Animal Health Corporation has introduced Nuflor® Oral 2.3% Concentrate Solution, the broadest spectrum oral antibiotic available for the treatment of several major causes of swine respiratory disease.

Nuflor Oral 2.3% Concentrate Solution contains florfenicol, a novel fast-acting, long-lasting antibiotic developed by Schering-Plough.

Luis R. Fernandez, D.V.M., senior product manager for Schering-Plough, says Nuflor Oral 2.3% Concentrate Solution is derived from a new molecule that is safe, effective and, because it is designed specifically for veterinary use, helps protect the effectiveness of human antibiotics.

“Our studies have shown that Nuflor Oral 2.3% Concentrate Solution, labeled for the treatment of swine respiratory disease associated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella choleraesuis and Streptococcus suis Type 2 , is highly effective against these major swine pathogens” Dr.Fernandez said. “Nuflor Oral 2.3% Concentrate Solution provides swine producers with greater confidence because they can now use one antibiotic to treat four separate causes of swine respiratory disease.”

Chun Zhou, D.V.M., Schering-Plough technical services veterinarian, adds that in clinical studies required for FDA approval, Nuflor Oral 2.3% Concentrate Solution significantly improved clinical signs of respiratory disease such as labored breathing, depression, elevated temperature and coughing.

Dr. Zhou further emphasized the convenience of this new tool for producers and veterinarians saying, “Nuflor Oral 2.3% Concentrate Solution requires no handling and injection of pigs, which means less work for producers and less stress for sick pigs. Administration via drinking water also means the entire pen is treated, which helps alleviate clinical signs in all affected pigs.”

Recommended Dosage of Nuflor Oral

The recommended dosage of Nuflor Oral 2.3% Concentrate Solution is 10 mg/kg per day. This is accomplished by producing a stock solution that will medicate 128 gallons of drinking water with each gallon containing 400 mg florfenicol (100 ppm). The medicated water should be the pigs’ only source of drinking water for five consecutive days.

Safety for Humans

Florfenicol, the antibiotic in Nuflor Oral 2.3% Concentrate Solution, is a unique molecular compound developed by Schering-Plough and is the only antimicrobial in its class. Florfenicol was developed exclusively for use in animals. This minimizes the potential for bacterial cross-resistance.
