Schering-Plough & Intervet together for better care
19 January 2008
ORLANDO, FL, January 19, 2008 –Throughout its history, Schering-Plough has focused on discovering and developing innovative new therapies in the human prescription, animal health and consumer health customer segments. The new combination with Intervet strengthens the animal health portfolio in several areas and brings together complementary lines of pharmaceuticals, biologicals and innovative services.
The combined animal health business is not only the world market leader in the production of animal health vaccines, but is now also one of the world’s leaders in the field of animal health -- with offices in more than 50 countries, products marketed in over 120 countries, produced in 28 manufacturing sites and developed in 22 Research & Development facilities around the world.
Our companion animal activities are aimed at improving the length and quality of life of pets and fostering human-animal bond. Our goal is to develop innovative vaccines that address unmet needs, and improve disease protection as well as the duration of that protection. In the specialty pharmaceutical area we target complex diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. To be the preferred partner for veterinary professionals we also provide innovative programs such as our chiller units, a device for storing and dispensing vaccines, and HOMEAGAIN®, our pet recovery system. Our approach in the CA market is to partner with our clients and provide useful Added Value Programs such as MyVetOnLine®. MVOL offers the clinic a dynamic website as well as in-clinic educational tools.
With several years of research in the safety and efficacy of our dog and cat vaccines, we provide veterinarians with extended duration-of-immunity vaccines that support customized vaccination protocols to address concerns of over-vaccination. Current guidelines from such organizations as AVMA and AAHA as well as leading universities advise the use of core antigens at extended intervals to offer immunity and to reduce the risk for an adverse vaccine reaction. CONTINUUM® vaccines support these guidelines by offering the only three-year labels for all core vaccines for both dogs and cats. As an example, CONTINUUM® HCP is the only vaccine that offers a labeled claim for three-year duration-of-immunity against feline panleukopenia, feline calicivirus and feline rhinotracheitis. These three-year core vaccines offer the foundation for a more customized approach to vaccination.
The welfare and healthcare of valued family pets is of major importance to us. Veterinarians and pet owners make sure that conditions such as diabetes are treated carefully. VETSULIN® 1, provides a canine insulin treatment specifically designed for veterinarians. We understand that diabetes in dogs can be a complex disease to manage. Our diabetes professionals offer a wide range of support tools and services to veterinarians to help them with the treatment of their diabetic patients.
Thanks to today’s improved care and medications, pets live longer, healthier lives. However, they are consequently more prone to a range of age-related diseases. ZUBRIN®, a novel dual-action anti-inflammatory for osteoarthritis designed to minimize the impact on a dog’s aging body, offers an effective treatment for pain relief.
Recognizing the special relationships people form with their pets, we are building strength in treatments for companion animals. Among these products for dogs are with OTOMAX® and MOMETAMAX®, three-way treatments for acute and chronic ear infections, PANACUR® and SAFE-GUARD® for the treatment of canine intestinal parasites and TRI-HEART PLUS® for the prevention of canine heartworm.
As a global leader in animal vaccines, we are concerned with global health issues and are in a position to take a leadership role in helping to control some threatening infectious diseases. In collaboration with AFYA Serengeti, which means “Health for the Serengeti”, we have been providing free rabies vaccines to vaccinate family dogs in and around the Serengeti National Park. This program has managed to significantly reduce the number of canine rabies cases, as well as the number of people needing hospital care for bites from rabid dogs.
