Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health extends its portfolio with LEVENTA® and supports veterinary endocrinology

9 October 2008

BOXMEER (the Netherlands), October 9, 2008 – As the global leader in the field of veterinary endocrinology, Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health today announces a further extension to its portfolio - LEVENTA®, an innovative oral solution for the management of hypothyroidism in dogs.

LEVENTA® (levothyroxine sodium) is the first once-daily, low-volume oral solution indicated for the treatment of hypothyroidism in dogs. Hypothyroidism is one of the most common hormonal conditions in the dog and requires life-long medical treatment that has to be given on a daily basis. LEVENTA® was launched during the annual meeting of the European Society of Veterinary Endocrinology (ESVE), which was held as a satellite meeting to the annual congress of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – Companion Animals (ECVIM-CA), September 4-6, 2008 in Ghent (Belgium).

“LEVENTA® is a key addition to our endocrine range”, says Nicolas Renard, International Product Manager at Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health. “As dog owners increasingly expect their veterinarians to provide convenient solutions, LEVENTA® is expected to help improve compliance in the medical treatment of hypothyroidism in dogs.”

Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health has been a main sponsor of the ECVIM-CA congress since 1999 and a sponsor of the ESVE since its inception in 2001. As part of these sponsorship programs, Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health supports young researchers in veterinary internal medicine and veterinary endocrinology by sponsoring of the awards for the best abstract presented by a young researcher at both the ESVIM (European Society for Veterinary Internal Medicine) and ESVE sessions in this congress.

This year’s winner of the ESVIM award was Dr. Bert Maddens from the Veterinary Faculty at the University of Ghent (Belgium), whereas this year’s winner of the ESVE award was Dr. Ghita Benchekroun from Maisons-Alfort Veterinary School in Paris (France). Each award winner received a travel grant to support attendance and present their work to a wider specialist audience at next year’s American Congress of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) meeting in Montreal (Canada).

The new combination Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health strengthens the animal health portfolio in several areas and brings together complementary lines of vaccines, specialty pharmaceuticals, antiparasitics and an enhanced science and technology platform. This ensures on-going commitment to meeting the challenges of the various species segments. Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health is not only the world market leader in the production of animal health vaccines, but is also one of the world’s leaders in the field of animal health.
