CSR selection: Sharing with the less fortunate
Fettercairn Youth Horse Project
Fettercairn Youth Horse Project is a community-owned equine facility, situated in a disadvantaged suburb of Dublin, to channel young people's love of horses into a constructive community activity. This provides them with the opportunities to develop their personal, social, equine and vocational skills into employment opportunities within the equine industry. Since 2007 Schering-Plough Animal Health Ireland supports this project with donations of equine products and routine visits of a veterinary practice. Occasionally specific presentations are given, like during Halloween camp on ‘Why animals hate Halloween’. More educational meetings on topics like de-worming and vaccination are planned.
Staff development of previously disadvantaged individuals
In 2006 Intervet South Africa Ltd has embarked on a staff development program aimed particularly at individuals from the previously disadvantaged black community. This has enabled staff employed initially in cleaning, warehousing and other functions to reach important positions in administration, technical and managerial departments.
A similar initiative has been set up to encourage individuals from this sector of the community to provide services for Intervet on an external basis by establishing their own businesses.
A better life for 1000 horses
Most horses in Romania are working animals, and as such are essential to local communities. Many of these horses work under difficult conditions, and often lack proper health care.
Three Intervet/schering-Plough Animal Health veterinarians were determined to improve the lot of these animals. Together with a delegation from the Veterinary Faculty of Timisoara and local veterinary surgeons, they de-wormed and vaccinated 1000 horses in the winter of 2005 and provided advice and education to owners on proper care for their animals.
